High in the Sierra Nevada travel to the Witch Town of Soportujar, Granada where lies a very unique village full of tales of witchcraft. Broomsticks fly on the nights of full moons and glimpses of black cats lurk in the streets! This is Soportujar, located in the Alta Alpujarra in Granada.  This awesome day trip into the gorgeous mountains of the Sierra Nevada has tons of surprises awaiting you! Make sure you have your camera ready at ALL times you never know what is around the corner.

What to look for

Baba Yaga Witch

This big statue of a witch´s head is Bruja Baba Yaga. She was a Russian sorceress with a reputation for eating naughty children. She is the face of the village and is one of the first statues to be seen upon arrival in town. Throughout your walking tour you will discover where she lived. Take a look out for a little tree house with enormous chicken legs located further into the village. You shouldn´t miss it!

Witches Viewpoint

This awesome viewpoint is the best of both worlds! It offers spectacular views of the town below and a unique statue of a wise witch and her apprentice cooking up a divine potion of some sorts in a huge cauldron.

Dragon Fountain

This isn´t just any ordinary fountain by the looks of this dragon. Drinking its water is supposedly a magical aphrodisiac and will increase your changes of fertility.

El Pozo de los Deseos

After walking through one of the tiniest alleys, you will find this famous wishing well. Make a wish and don´t forget to toss a coin, because this isn´t just any well! The town legend’s superstition says that bad luck will be bestowed onto those who DO NOT throw in a coin.

La escoba Mágica

This awesome larger than life magical broomstick lays in the heart of the town. It wouldn´t be a witches broom without a black cat on the back!

Evil Snake

Don´t miss this not-so friendly evil snake lurking in the streets! Don´t get caught in his grip.

Magic Cauldrons

This is where all the real magic happens! It truly wouldn´t be a witches town without a stack of cauldrons to make the best potions or the most delicious soups.

Dreamweaver Spider

This massive Araña Tejedora de Sueños allegedly guards the upper part of the village. I think he´s doing a pretty good job scaring away the tourists!

Jet Fountain/ Chicken-Leg House

You have made it to Fuente del Chorro! A famous fountain with an impossible riddle sitting just below two giant chicken legs. The peculiar corner shares home with Baba Yaga Witch.

Hansel and Gretel House

Also known as the Casa de Caramelos, it´s quite easy to stumble upon the house of Hansel and Gretel! This larger-than-life house showcases some of all of our favorite childhood treats! The best angles are from below, looking up and from above, the access is quite easy and on the right side of the house you will find stairs.

Conclusion

Before heading out of the village, I stopped at an awesome witch shop to grab some souvenirs before heading out. The jewelry is handmade on premises, all the goodies are reasonably priced, and the staff is super friendly. This is an awesome visit for friends, families and couples! Something unique and whimsical to experience, especially around Halloween. Keep in mind this is a small village with about 260 inhabitants on the top of the mountain! It is a super big tourist attraction and people from all around love to have a visit. My suggestion is to arrive early before the crowds.

I WITCH YOU A HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Happy traveling!
